What does 80s Filter do?
It takes one photo you choose and restyles the person in it into a 1980s version — big volumized hair, bold blush, neon and pastel fashion, warm analog film color, VHS grain, and a synthwave or mall-portrait backdrop. One tap, one look.
How do I make my first 80s photo?
Open the App, tap the frame to load a photo, then tap Apply 80s. The first time, you'll see a short screen explaining that your photo is sent to our AI provider — tap Agree & Continue. If you're not subscribed yet, you'll see the paywall before anything is sent.
What photo works best?
A clear, well-lit selfie or portrait gives the most dramatic 80s transformation. Avoid very dark or blurry photos and heavy existing filters.
How long does it take?
Usually under a minute. Keep the App open on the "Rewinding to 1985…" screen until your photo appears.
Why doesn't the result look exactly like I imagined?
It uses a generative AI image model — creative, not deterministic. The same photo can produce a slightly different look on different runs. Tap Do another for a fresh take.
Can I save or share the result?
Yes. On the result screen tap Save to Photos or Share. Every render is also kept in The Vault inside the App.
Subscriptions
Do I need to subscribe?
Yes. Generating an 80s photo requires an active subscription. We never send your photo to our AI provider until your subscription is confirmed.
What plans are available?
- Weekly — 7 photo renders every week while active. Auto-renews weekly until cancelled.
- Yearly — 10 photo renders every week while active — a higher weekly allowance than Weekly — billed once a year.
The current price of each plan is shown at the time of purchase in your local currency.
Do unused renders carry over?
Yes. Every week your subscription is active, your plan's number of renders (7 or 10) is added to your balance, and anything you don't use stacks up and does not expire while you stay subscribed.
How do I cancel?
iOS Settings → tap your name → Subscriptions → 80s Filter → Cancel Subscription. Access continues until the end of your current billing period. Apple manages this directly — we can't cancel for you.
How do I get a refund?
Refund requests go directly to Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
I subscribed but still see the paywall.
Tap Restore purchases on the paywall or in Settings. If it still doesn't unlock after a minute, email us with your Apple purchase confirmation.
Your photo & face data
What happens to my photo after I select it?
It is sent — over an encrypted connection, through a relay server we run that hides our AI key — to our AI provider fal.ai, running OpenAI's GPT Image 2 model, solely to generate the 80s version. We do not run any server that stores your photo, and it's never used to train AI. Full detail is in the Privacy Policy.
Do you scan my face or make a faceprint?
No. We do not run facial recognition, face detection, face matching, or any biometric analysis, and we never create a faceprint or facial-geometry map. The only "face data" involved is the ordinary likeness in the photo you choose to upload. See the Face Data section of the Privacy Policy.
Do you store the images you generate?
The generated file is hosted by our AI provider. The App stores only its URL, in a private per-device history readable only by your own anonymous installation, so you can see it again in The Vault. Delete an entry there any time.
Do I need to create an account?
No. There's no sign-up, no email, and no password. The App signs in anonymously to keep your weekly counter and history on your device only.
Do you sell my data?
No. We don't sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers, and we run no ads. Our only revenue is from subscriptions.
Can I use a photo of someone else?
Only if that person has given you their consent to use their image in the App. Uploading a photo of someone without their permission is against our Terms.
What permissions does the App need?
- Photo Library (read): Only when you tap to load a photo. Apple's picker hands us only the single photo you select.
- Photo Library (add): Only when you tap "Save to Photos" on a finished result.
- Network: To reach our relay/AI provider, Firebase, and RevenueCat.
Troubleshooting
Generation seems stuck on the "Rewinding to 1985…" screen.
It usually takes under a minute, sometimes longer if our AI provider is under high load. Keep the App open. If it fails, you'll see a "Tracking lost" screen and can try again.
The App said the render couldn't be applied.
Try a clearer, well-lit photo without heavy existing filters, and check your internet connection, then tap "Try again".
The App crashed when I tried to generate.
Email us with your iOS version, iPhone model, and what you were doing when it crashed.
My saved image doesn't appear in Photos.
When you tap Save to Photos, iOS asks for permission to add to your library the first time. Make sure you approved it (iOS Settings → 80s Filter → Photos), then try again.
My Vault is empty even though I made photos before.
The Vault is stored per-device and does not transfer between devices or survive a reinstall. Renders you saved to your Photo Library are unaffected.
Reporting abuse
If you believe someone is using 80s Filter to create harmful content — uploading photos of people without consent, generating harassment or impersonation, manipulated imagery intended to mislead, or any other illegal use — email [email protected] with the subject "80s Filter — Abuse Report" and as much detail as you can. We investigate every report within 48 hours.
